If the Obama administration is serious about turning the page on its relations with Latin America, it should reassess President Bush's unthinking support of the Calderón administration. Obama should recognise that there are many more effective allies in Mexican civil society - such as watchdog groups, journalists and scholars - and reach out to them in an effort to consolidate democracy in North America. It also wouldn't hurt to take radical measures to stem the southward flow of weapons and reduce drug consumption in the US.

A Visit Obama Should Have Skipped (The Chicago Tribune, January 14, 2009)
Barack Obama has made the wrong choice by beginning his dialogue with Latin America in a meeting Monday with Mexico's President Felipe Calderón. He should have chosen a more creative leader, like Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Michelle Bachelet of Chile or Cristina Kirchner of Argentina.

Calderon is desperate for international recognition to compensate for his failing domestic popularity. While Obama may believe that he is signaling an interest in Latin America by meeting with Calderon, he is actually lending support to a politically bankrupt administration.
